Naples’ Cardarelli hospital has chosen to innovate through logistic efficiency, for which Oppent was awarded with the creation of Hospital Pneumatic Tube System, a pneumatic transport system for rapid movement of test analysis samples.
Cardarelli’s installation consists of an 800-meter network of pipes (ISO 110 diameter), connecting the ER; the medical laboratory, transfusion centre and the oncology and haematology departments. These areas are located in 4 different hospital wings, which is why automated transport significantly reduces delivery times and raises overall efficiency.
The system was designed to manage emergencies, and consists of two “universal” stations conveniently located in the ER and oncology/hematology department, while two multiple sending and receiving stations are located in the laboratory and in the transfusion centre. These latter are conceived to manage the higher transport fluxes typically generated in such hospital areas: they are able to send and receive up to three carriers simultaneously, thus adding to the efficiency. Consequently, the TurnAround Time (TAT) is reduced by 70%.
